Annotation:

This is a new book that takes a fresh approach to the history of the formation of Russian statehood. Instead of the conventional account of military campaigns and the annexation of land, the author draws our attention to the internal aspects of state-building: the acquisition of sovereignty, the formation of structures of structures of governance, the function of monarchs and their advisors, the formulation of key concepts and ideology, the role of elected bodies, and so forth. The author examines the development of the Muscovite state in the 15th and 16th centuries with a broad, comparative perspective – from Spain in the West to the Ottoman Empire in the East – and concludes that Muscovy’s development corresponds to one of several European models of the modern state. Mikhail Krom holds a doctorate in history and is a full professor in the department of history at the European University at St. Petersburg. Krom, the author of numerous academic papers, is a specialist on the history of the early modern period and comparative historical studies.
