Annotation: Anatoly Smelyansky’s book is dedicated to his longtime friend and colleague, the outstanding theater writer and critic Inna Solovyova (1927–2024). In the first part of the book, the author attempts to paint a portrait of Solovyova by reconstructing her biography and enriching it with vivid recollections and precise psychological details. The second part presents the correspondence between Smelyansky and Solovyova; even when separated by the Atlantic Ocean, the two continued their collaborative work and engaged in an ongoing dialogue about the fate of the Moscow Art Theatre in the 20th century. The third and fourth parts bring together texts written by Smelyansky over the years on various occasions, all of which are connected in some way to Solovyova’s major works and to her deeply held vision of the Art Theatre. Anatoly Smelyansky is a Doctor of Arts, a theater critic, a historian of theater, and the author of numerous shows on Russian 20th-century theater, created for the Kultura television channel.
