Annotation: Migration is one of a number of social phenomena that lie at the foundation of today’s global world. At first glance, the process of migration goes in only one direction: residents from poorer regions head for locales that have a higher standard of living. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that emigrants create multidirectional connections between the societies that “send” and “receive” them. The contributing authors of this book explore transnationalism and translocality—concepts that have yet to find a space of systematic application within Russian academia. These authors reveal the ways in which emigrants structure their life strategies over and above state boundaries and barriers—between “here” and “there”. The essays in this collection investigate the lives of migrant workers from Central Asia and the North Caucasus, as well as the lives of their relatives who remain back home: the on-the-go nature of everyday life; family spread across different places of residence; displacement of persons and belongings; digital communication and courtship strategies; value systems that are characteristic of those who live “between two worlds”. This collected volume is the result of an international research project on “Transnational and Translocal Aspects of Migration in Contemporary Russia”, which received support from the Russian Science Foundation in 2014 – 2018.
