Annotation: Mikhail Matyushin, a painter and musician, and one of the key figures of the Russian avant-garde, was married to three women over the course of his life: Maria Patzak, Elena Guro, and Olga Gromozova. Alexander Laskin’s book is a documentary novel about Matyushin’s wives, with the primary focus on the latter two: Elena Guro, a symbol and embodiment of the Silver Age, and Olga Gromozova, a Soviet writer who was supported by Alexander Prokofiev and Vsevolod Kochetov. By tracing and artistically reconstructing the complex biographies of these women, Laskin reveals how their lives reflect the history of the entire 20th century, moving from the Silver Age to the Soviet era, with a brief interlude during the avant-garde period, represented in the book by Matyushin and his circle. Alexander Laskin is a scholar and writer, Doctor of Cultural Studies, Professor at the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts, and the author of numerous works of documentary prose.
